About AAMCO Transmissions & Total Car Care

This Charlestown AAMCO (Boston area) inherited Mike's Auto's Union Square faithful when that shop closed - Mike took over the franchise down the road, and Gil and Angelo continue the knowledgeable work. Referrals come from other shops.

Two serious disputes with attached competing invoices: overcharging allegations and a brakes-and-rotors job that a year later was declared needed again. Document everything. Massachusetts transmission and repair. Rated 4.1 across 57 reviews.

I was so bummed when Mike's Auto in Union Square closed, and so excited to see that Mike had taken over the Aamco just down the road in Charlestown. I have relied on Mike for almost 9 years—he always treats me with respect and explains exactly what's wrong with my car in a way I can understand. His prices are reasonable and he's always very fast and accommodating to my schedule for dropping off/picking up my car. I can't recommend Mike enough and will follow him anywhere he goes (though I hope he stays at the new location for a long time!).

I was referred to AAMCO in Charestown by another shop. Great service by the AAMCO team. I brought my car here for the first time and they were able to take me next day. After they examined the issues I was concerned with they gave me a call and were able to give me a best and worst case scenario with a general range of how the costs may fluctuate, which I very much appreciated. They were able to finish with my car in a timely manner and I had my car back faster than I expected and for a cost much lower than I expected. I will be returning for my future maintenance.

DO NOT USE THIS AAMCO!!!! PLEASE READ AND SEE ATTACHED INVOICES FROM 2 OTHER SHOPS. I wish i can give 0 stars... please read before using this aamco. Mike overcharged me for a transmission rebuild ( i am out of state) i approved of the work though because i had no choice. Total price $6494.72. After picking up the vehicle we made it aprox 250 miles till the vehicle got stuck on the road again with the same exact problem.. It got towed to another aamco location, who was working with mike at this location to fix it. I was getting the run around for over a month, they could not fix it. I took it to a local mechanic shop twice, where they came to the conclusion that the transmission rebuild was done improperly and needs to be replaced again. Vehicle was towed back to aamco again and they said " The problem is electrical and its not the transmission" I eventually paid $1500 to get the vehicle towed back to new york. I brought it to my local Transmission shop who removed the transmission, took it apart, took pictures of everything that was done. The oil pump inside the transmission was damaged, which was causing the clutches to fail, thus complete failure of the transmission. My local Transmission shop was able to repair the transmission within a week, total rebuild price was $4200. ( alot cheaper than this location) Not only was their price $2,000 over, but their work was absolutely garbage. So because i used this shop.. between their bill, the transmission shop that actually fixed it, diagnostic charges at another shop and towing bills, i spent over $12,000 total for a transmission. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND FIND ANOTHER SHOP. Mike refuses to do the right thing here because "something doesn't add up" That's the response that i got from him. Of course something doesn't add up, Because my transmission that i paid for wasn't rebuilt properly and i have two different shops telling me the same thing... After getting it rebuilt by my usual local transmission shop here in New York the Vehicle is driving perfectly...

After having full brakes and rotors replaced, 1 year later I had a flat tire. When completing the repair of the tire I was told I needed new rear brakes and rotors. I questioned how that could be possible when they had just been done a year prior, so I returned to AAMCO to have them relooked at. At that time I was told that because I street park, my brakes were likely to experience accelerated wear. This sounded odd considering the volume of cars that street park in Boston and the fact that most of them likely aren’t replacing brakes annually. Either way, AAMCO replaced the brake pads and sent me on my way. Now again, 1 year later I went for my emissions test and failed due to the rear brakes needing replacing. I was so fed up I took the car to a new mechanic at the recommendation of the emissions testing facility. When asking the new mechanic if I should be replacing brakes annually or if street parking might be causing accelerated deterioration of my brakes, he simply laughed and said, “that’s not a thing, you shouldn’t need to replace brakes more frequently than every 5k miles”. Long story short, learn from my mistake- save your time, money and frustration by going to a more reputable mechanic that does the job right the first time!
