About Valvoline Instant Oil Change
This Valvoline (Boston/Cambridge area) does routine oil changes plus filter replacements in 10-15 minutes with no wait, and Tyrone is the fan favorite - knowledgeable, cheerful, happy to explain what the multi-point check actually found. Two-year regulars say the upsells people fear are genuine safety checks.
The negatives involve Tyrone himself on an off day (defensive behavior per one customer) and a tight Cambridge lot - go easy on the entry. Massachusetts, quick-lube territory. Rated 4.2 across nearly 335 reviews.

I’ve been coming to this location for over two years now, and I can’t recommend them enough. The oil changes are always quick, and the customer service is absolutely excellent. They consistently go above and beyond—recently, I had a dashboard light on, and they checked it for me free of charge! If you’re looking for reliable, friendly service, this is the place to go.Great team!
Was in and out in less than 15 minutes, staff were very professional and easy going. I get why people think they're being upsold, but they are genuinely checking and inspecting some basic maintenance stuff. They mentioned a couple of things I was already aware of and also noticed I had just replaced the air filter, so I know they weren't just trying to add random things. I declined the extra services and appreciated their honesty, would recommend this location and will return to them for my next oil change.
I was highly satisfied with my experience at this Valvoline Instant Oil Change. The service was fast, efficient, and thorough. The attendants were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive—they explained all the recommended services clearly and kept me informed throughout the process. I appreciated how they took the time to check my car completely and made sure I understood everything they were doing. Overall, excellent service from start to finish.
I’ve been lucky enough to get Tyrone as my support at this location a few times, and he is a joy. Knowledgeable, happy to explain things to me, and cheerful as can be. I even heard him talk to a young women’s parent on the phone to explain why they were recommending certain services. If you are looking for a positive experience and curious to learn about your car - this place will be great for you!
Came in and there wasn’t a wait. In total it took about 10-15 mins for a routine oil change and air/engine filter replacement which was amazing. I appreciated that they explained why they were recommending my air filter be changed (it was black 🤮) by providing a visual comparison of my filter and a new one. They did the same with the engine filter as well. Didn’t try to upsell other things that I knew I didn’t need. As a woman I hate taking my car in because often times mechanics try to tell you everything needs a replacement. I loved having a female tech as it made me feel even more confident that I wasn’t being swindled. Will definitely be back!
Today, as I was leaving work, I realized I needed to change my oil quickly. I saw that Valvoline was near me, and I arrived about 15 minutes before their closing time. Despite that, they methodically took their time checking everything on my car, as well as changing the oil. On top of that, they were SO friendly. Michael was amazing! He made me feel so welcome and had such a positive attitude. He was super insightful and helpful and was a fantastic conversationalist. Gabriel was also extremely efficient and helpful in changing the oil in my car. This was my first time at a Valvoline but I had such a great experience at this one that I now will choose Valvoline every time I need my oil changed.
Go in prepared to advocate for yourself. They start replacing things with little transparency and I’ve had to stop them mid replacement to ask what they’re doing. I asked for an oil change and they started doing my air filter and windshield wipers. All of which I can easily change myself for a third of the price. Irks me they don’t ask or tell you what the cost would be. Also my air filter wasn’t bad per my mechanic of many, many years.
I went to the Cambridge location because it was on my way home. When I pulled in it was kind of tight pulling into the spot and I was trying to both follow the employees hand signals and also looking around my car to make sure I didn't hit anything. The employee who was helping me pull in actually started to aggressively speak to me, almost yell at me. He said something along the lines of "You either follow my instructions or you do it yourself, pick one!!" I felt very shocked from the start because I didn't understand why he was yelling at me. Then once I was parked he was pretty rude about pushing me to get my transmission fluid and radiator fluid replaced. I would have been willing to do it either way if it was suggested to me, but he didn't just give me the information clearly and upfront. Instead he did a lot of being like "do you even know what it means if this runs out? Do you even understand how expensive that will be?" and he spoke to me like I was not smart at all and couldn't understand anything he was saying. I wasn't even complaining about needing to do these things or the pricing, so I was confused about why he was being so aggressive. When they were doing all the checks on my car he mentioned out loud to himself that one of my headlights was out. I knew it was out and was meaning to get it replaced but I wasn't sure if they could do that at Valvoline because he said it to himself and never asked me if I wanted them to do it for me. Because of how aggressive and rude he was being, I did not feel good about speaking up and so I never got my headlight fixed and I was confused about why they wouldn't ask me to do it. Then once all the work was done, getting my fluids and oil changed came out to over $500. I left feeling frustrated because the entire experience and then within one day my check tire light came on. And when I was on the highway I could hear scraping of something underneath my car. I pulled over and checked my tire pressures and they were fine. So I ended up going to ANOTHER Valvoline within one day of already going and paying over $500! When I went to the Somerville location they were AMAZING and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They said that the Cambridge location had forgotten to screw in my skid plate?? And so it was dragging when I drove. They screwed it in for me and checked all my fluids because they didn't seem to trust the Cambridge location. All the levels came back okay, but they were also confused about why they hadn't asked if I wanted my headlight fixed. I told them I wasn't sure either and then within ten minutes the very kind Somerville guys had changed my light and I was on my way. I would NOT recommend the Cambridge location for these reasons. Awful experience.
During a routine oil change, Tyrone's (general manager for this location) behavior towards me throughout the entire visit was visibly defensive, rude, hostile, and condescending. He aggressively tried to upsell me a battery and cabin filter, and gave humiliating and unhelpful answers when I asked for more information. He shoved my dirty cabin filter through my open car window into my face, loudly demanding I hold it. When I refused, he made aggressive physical gestures as if he were going to throw the dirty filter across the car onto my passenger seat, all while still loudly demanding I take it and hold onto it until they were ready to put it back. No other staff intervened. This blatant bullying caused me to feel trapped and unsafe inside my own vehicle. I doubt very much that Tyrone would have treated me this way if I were a man. In addition, the final service documents he handed me flagged absolutely zero issues with my battery or cabin filter, indicating a huge lack of integrity. I submitted a formal complaint and received a full refund and a few coupons for free services from the Area Manager, but after seeing recent reviews saying that Tyrone is still actively employed here, there is no way I would bring my car back to this location to use those coupons. Even going to a different location does not sit right with me. A refund and coupons do not excuse an absolute failure of customer safety and basic integrity. Do not come here.
Went here last week for a simple oil change. On the way home I heard a screeching noise and saw my skid plate was dragging on the ground. They somehow didn’t put ANY of the hardware back in to secure the plate. Had to bring it to a local shop to fix and reattach the plate. It was probably the kid wearing one AirPod that wasn’t listening to his coworkers. Not worth the money to bring to court but that’s a really embarrassing level of service.
